The subject of sports betting in the U.S. is a rather strange phenomenon. Because of an outdated rule based on a premise that people are less and less concerned by, the country is stuck in this strange, hypocritical middle ground: Sports betting is illegal, yet millions of people do it anyway.
The American Gaming Association has been one of the harshest critics of what it calls an “antiquated” federal law — “The federal ban on sports betting is an utter failure,” its CEO Geoff Freeman says — and to help rally support behind its position, the organization shared this infographic breaking down the forthcoming activity. The estimated $10.1 billion in illegal wagers is a 13 percent uptick on last year’s estimated $9.2 billion.
