Boston Globe: Former police commissioner to advise on halting illegal gambling

Edward F. Davis, the former Boston police commissioner, has signed up to provide advice to law enforcement on how to prevent illegal gambling.

The American Gaming Association named Davis along with four others to a newly appointed national advisory board on illegal gambling. The board is expected to help law enforcement agencies devise strategiesto disrupt illegal gambling.

“There is a stark difference between legitimate industry” such as the casinos represented by the American Gaming Association “who are good community partners, and the bad actors who aren’t regulated and have no respect for the law,” Davis said, according to the gaming association.

Davis was Boston police commissioner from 2006 to 2013, and gained wide notice after the Boston Marathon bombings. Since stepping down as commissioner, Davis has been a visiting fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and has served as a consultant on various projects, including on a Mark Wahlberg movie on the Marathon bombings.

The first Las Vegas-styled casino in Massachusetts is scheduled to open next week.
