Republican National Committee Resolution

Statement by Frank J. Fahrenkopf, Jr.

January 21, 1999

Brian Lehman [1]
(202) 552-2680

I believe that the Resolutions Committee of the Republican National Committee acted responsibly today in overwhelmingly defeating the resolution in question. Neither political party should approach the slippery slope of subjective litmus tests upon which to base support of duly nominated party candidates or to determine the “type of contributor” that can make legal, political contributions. If a party were to selectively ban our legal business, what would be next? A prohibition of contributors and candidates who enjoy a glass of red wine with a steak dinner? The more than 1 million people employed by the gaming industry, as well as our tens of millions of shareholders and customers, have the right to participate and be represented in the political process.
