Fast Facts: The Positive Impact of Volunteering

Executive volunteer programs are a key component of successful businesses. In fact, volunteer programs improve employee ratings of a company, spur positive word-of-mouth and improve employee retention.

  • 87 percent of Americans believe it is important for businesses to offer employee volunteer programs.
  • 72 percent of working Americans – and 87 percent of working students over 18 – would choose to work for a business that supports charitable causes when deciding between identical job offers.
  • 56 percent of Americans think workplace volunteer opportunities improve employee morale.
  • Volunteering appears to have a powerful impact on the six signs of personal wellness, with those who participate in volunteer activities reporting higher levels of life satisfaction, sense of control over life and feeling physically and emotionally healthier.
  • Encouragement from the workplace strengthens volunteers’ relationships with their employer and colleagues. Research shows that company involvement in employee volunteer opportunities can lead to employee well-being and positive attitudes toward employers.
  • Surveys show volunteering makes a difference in seniors’ quality of life, with those who participate in volunteer activities maintaining more positive attitudes towards aging and control over their health.
