As New York voters prepare to vote on a casino referendum in November, neither side of the issue is campaigning at a fever pitch. The race for mayor of New York City will "take most of the oxygen out of the room," said James Featherstonhaugh, the president of the New York Gaming Association. The City Council in Fitchburg, Mass., unanimously approved hiring legal counsel to assist with a community agreement over a proposed casino. Officials in Easton, Mass., are negotiating a community agreement with developers behind a casino in neighboring Raynham, Mass. The Nevada Gaming Control Board gave a preliminary green light to an agreement between Golden Gaming and Treasure Island. The marketing deal allows Golden Gaming customers to sign up for online poker offered by Treasure Island through 888 Holdings. “This is a good example of new ideas coming to the marketplace,” said A.G. Some residents of Milford, Mass., have formed a pro-casino group called "Citizens for Milford’s Future." The group supports a proposed $1 billion Foxwoods casino for the town. “We’re not going to get a second bite at this apple, we're not going to get a second chance,” said Michael Kaplan, the group's founder. The proposal for a casino at Suffolk Downs in East Boston could be put before a citywide vote in Boston. However, some City Council members say the matter should be decided by East Boston residents. Pro-casino and anti-casino groups are gearing up for an election in Milford, Mass., on a proposed Foxwoods casino. The Nevada Gaming Control Board conducted a workshop meeting on offering progressive jackpots beyond state lines, which could be the first step to offering online poker outside the state. Sri Lanka has approved an agreement with Australia's Crown Ltd. to build a casino resort on waterfront property. Sri Lanka lifted a ban on gambling in 2010, and local firm John Keells Holdings also plans to build a casino resort.
