A self-help tool kit for disordered gamblers developed by Harvard Medical School's Division on Addictions and the Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling is now available as an interactive program. "First Step to Change" navigates individuals through a three-step program that explains the facts about gambling, encourages self-reflection and provides additional resources. The original tool kit, funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the National Center for Responsible Gaming through the Institute for Research on Pathological Gambling and Related Disorders, was developed after research indicated that people struggling with an addictive disorder are ambivalent about changing their behavior. Moreover, most disordered gamblers are not involved in formal treatment, and many seek change on their own.
