The Institute for Research on Pathological Gambling and Related Disorders at Harvard Medical School's Division on Addictions is offering Incentive Grants of up to $20,000 to stimulate and encourage new investigators to enter the field of gambling studies.
The Incentive Grants are being awarded to provide "seed" funds for new investigators who are within five years of their terminal degree (M.D. or Ph.D.) and have not received support from the National Institutes of Health, the Institute for Research on Pathological Gambling and Related Disorders, or the National Center for Responsible Gaming. Similar to the career development awards offered by the National Institutes of Health, the Incentive Grants will encourage applicants to secure a meaningful mentoring relationship with an experienced researcher.
The Institute invites applications for Incentive Grants to focus on vulnerable and special needs segments of the population, including women, the elderly and selected ethnocultural and lower socioeconomic groups. The Institute is especially interested in the effects of culture and ethnicity on gambling disorders.
Applicants for Incentive Grants may seek support for projects such as pilot or feasibility studies; analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology. An independent panel of recognized experts in the field of addictive disorders will review the proposals. As with all extramural grant applications submitted to the Institute, the peer reviewers will apply the criteria of the National Institutes of Health to ascertain the scientific merit of the proposed investigations.
Applications are due May 14. To obtain a copy of the announcement and application guidelines, visit the Web site of the Institute for Research on Pathological Gambling and Related Disorders, or contact Christine Reilly at 617-384-9030.
