Dear Editor:

In the recent online article “Casinos as the Bleak New Senior Citizen Center,” writer Amy Ziettlow paints an inaccurate picture of the casino industry and, indeed, her own interactions at a Louisiana casino disprove her own conclusion.

All the patrons interviewed by Ms. Ziettlow gave every indication they enjoyed their visits to casinos, and they all appeared to be part of the vast majority of casino customers who play responsibly. Additionally, the casino employees she encounters are friendly and professional. It is difficult to see how Ms. Ziettlow decided that the entertainment experience described was “bleak,” but she draws a negative conclusion anyway.

During Responsible Gaming Education Week (RGEW)—which prompted Ms. Ziettlow’s casino visit and story—the AGA and its member companies highlight their year-round efforts at encouraging patrons and employees to be responsible when playing casino games. Ms. Ziettlow completely distorted the point of RGEW, which provides resources on topics such as understanding the odds and learning how slot machines work.

We appreciate Ms. Ziettlow drawing attention to RGEW, but only wish she had taken it as an opportunity to educate herself and others about the gaming industry, instead of perpetuating old myths and stereotypes.
