  • A Look at the Year Ahead

If you have picked up a newspaper, turned on a TV or looked at a website in the past nine months, you know that 2012 is an election year, and given those circumstances, the political climate and agenda on Capitol Hill in the coming year is likely to be dominated by the upcoming election.

The presidential election will get most of the media coverage, and some of the key issues debated during the campaign – taxes, health care, immigration, regulation and budget reform – will significantly affect the business community and could greatly impact how gaming companies operate.

  • Taking Measure of the Impact of our Industry

More than 15 years ago, the American Gaming Association (AGA) commissioned two studies on the economic impact of the commercial casino industry. Those studies detailed the macro- and microeconomic impacts of the $25 billion commercial casino industry, which, at the time, directly employed 284,000 people. The statistic I still recall from one of those studies was that for every million dollars in revenue, 13 jobs were created.

Latest Letters to the Editor

  • Chronicle of Higher Education

    Dear Editor:

Your recent article “Games of Chance” by Peter Wood levels false and unfair criticism of the gaming industry.  If the arguments posed by Mr. Wood were true, communities that host casinos would be centers of depravity rather than home to successful communities that see casinos as valued partners.

  • New York Times

    Dear Editor:

The recent op-ed “New York’s Bad Bet” by Paul Davies inaccurately portrays the gaming industry and its impact on communities across the nation.

Many peer-reviewed studies have found no connection between casinos and crime, divorce and the other social problems Mr. Davies attributes to their influence. If these claims were true, states with commercial casinos would be centers of depravity instead of home to successful communities that see casinos as valuable local partners.

  • New York Post

    Dear Editor:

The recent op-ed “The House Loses” by Sam Skolnik relies on faulty information to inaccurately and unfairly depict the impact of the gaming industry in communities across the country
