A panel of experts in the fields of marketing, advertising, public relations, communications and Web design judges each entry for the Communications Awards.  Our judges volunteer their time, and everyone involved in the Communications Awards would like to thank them publicly for their efforts and time.  Information about our judging panel can be found below.

Rick Anderson is president of R.L. Anderson & Associates, a financial public relations and marketing communications consultancy, based in New York City.  Mr. Anderson founded his firm in 2006 with the goal of providing senior-level communications counseling to companies and organizations seeking to enhance their business and reputation through results-driven communications. He has over 30 years of experience assisting a wide range of companies, from multi-nationals to emerging growth companies, in building shareholder value and generating broad recognition in the financial and business media.

Mr. Anderson served as senior vice president and partner in the corporate and business communications group at Fleishman-Hillard, where he co-chaired of the Financial Communications Practice group and was responsible for corporate communications, investor relations and financial media clients.  Prior to joining Fleishman in 2002, he was a senior vice president and co-founder of Thomson Financial’s Global Consulting Group, a leading financial communications firm.

Rick has held senior positions at GCI Group, Ogilvy, Adams & Rinehart & Co., and served as the president of Adams Cohen Financial Communications.  He is a longtime member of the National Investor Relations Institute and served as the section chair for the PRSA’s financial communications section.

Jon betts

Jon Betts is the founder and creative director for Glows in the Dark Studios. Since founding the company in 1994, Jon has designed, produced, programmed, or consulted on many large, successful Web sites and multi-media projects for major clients including, T Rowe Price, DuPont, Johns Hopkins and the CDC. His recent work has focused on producing web presences for national non-profits and not-for-profit organizations.

Jon has over 12 years experience designing, developing and integrating complex yet easy to use proprietary CMS systems to manage content-heavy Web sites. He is currently focusing on making open source solutions as easy to use and designer friendly as proprietary solutions.

Jon is a cum laude graduate of the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore. He has taught interactive design at The Maryland Institute, College of Art and The Johns Hopkins School of Continuing Studies.

Mike Carberry

With an undergraduate degree from Manhattan College, service in Vietnam as a Marine infantry officer, and an MBA from Columbia University, Mike began his career in New York as an advertising account executive. He moved to Washington as advertising manager of the U.S. Postal Service. He was a founding partner of Porter, Novelli; CEO of Shandwick's Henry J. Kaufman & Associates (National Indian Gaming Association was a client); and Managing Director of Burson-Marsteller's grassroots communications subsidiary.


In 2006, Mike was inducted into the National Capital Hall of Fame of the Public Relations Society of America. He won the Ad Club of DC's highest award, the Silver Medal. He is a past-president of the DC Division of the American Cancer Society and was an adjunct professor of marketing at Georgetown University from 1984 through 2004. He is currently Executive-in-Residence at American University's School of Business. He is a retired Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

Angeline Close, Ph.D.

Angeline Close researches, teaches, and serves the marketing community. Her expertise is in event marketing—namely how consumers' experiences at sponsored events influence attitudes and consumer behavior. Synergistically, she studies consumers' experiences with electronic marketplaces—consumers' online experiences, and how they interplay with onground events. Her research ties theory with implications for consumers, society, or consumer-focused business practice. She has contributed peer-reviewed studies in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Advances in Consumer Research, Journal of Advertising Research, and Journal of Business Research, among other articles and book chapters. She also reviews for the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science (JAMS) and Journal of Advertising.

Experienced as an educator, Dr. Close has taught Marketing Management, Advertising/IMC, International Marketing, and Sales/Promotions courses. At UNLV, she teaches marketing, advertising and brand promotion. Dr. Close engages her students’ thinking in marketing theories and applications, especially in the local entertainment economy. 

Linda Dove

Linda Dove, a public relations specialist, is a Senior Vice President of the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA). She joined the group in 1990 and specializes in state and local government issues.   She led the advertising industry’s efforts to protect gaming advertising from government regulation in the 1990’s.
The AAAA is the national trade association representing the advertising agency business in the United States. Its membership produces approximately 80 percent of the total advertising volume placed by agencies nationwide. Although virtually all of the large, multinational agencies are members of the AAAA, more than 60 percent of our membership bills less than $10 million per year.

The AAAA is not a club. It is a management-oriented association that offers its members the broadest possible services, expertise and information regarding the advertising agency business.The average AAAA agency has been a member for more than 20 years, and a dozen agencies can trace their memberships back to the group of 111 agencies that founded the AAAA in 1917.

Barbara Faculjak is the President of Minerva Marketing, LLC, a marketing and communications consulting firm based in Washington, D.C.  A former U.S. Markets Leader for Ernst & Young and marketing executive for Sallie Mae, Barbara has more than twenty years of experience in all aspects of marketing. She has helped dozens of organizations in various industries make the most of their marketing dollars, serving clients ranging in size from $1million to $1 billion in revenue.  Minerva Marketing specializes in service industries, translating complex technical issues into communications and sales tools that are effective in reaching the right customer audiences.  The firm has helped organizations of all sizes in a wide range of industries including financial services, human resources, education, health care, technology, accounting, environmental and energy services and others.  Projects include creating and implementing all aspects of strategic marketing and communications plans, re-branding, market research, communications training and writing.  Barbara is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and holds an MBA from UW-Milwaukee.  She is a member of ASAE, the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS), and the Legal Marketing Association (LMA).

Frank Fantini publishes Fantini's Gaming Report, a daily newsletter and an information service to professional investors and corporate level executives in the gaming industry.  He also heads Fantini Research which provides customized research to clients, and advisory services to investors.  Mr. Fantini is a former newspaper editor and publisher who has been integrally involved in tourism in his home state of Delaware where he has served as president of the Kent County Tourism Corporation and on the Governor's Tourism Advisory Board.  He also was elected to the Delaware Tourism Hall of Fame.

Ellen Field has more than 25 years of experience in communications, marketing, strategic planning and policy development with a wide variety of government, nonprofit and private sector organizations and an extensive background in social marketing. 

For the past two years, she led Porter Novelli’s health care practice in the Washington, D.C. office where she directed business development efforts and managed a team to service clients such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, the American Lung Association and the American Association of Medical Colleges.

Prior to that responsibility, Ellen served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services where she was responsible for shaping and clearing the Department’s communications campaigns.  Prior to that, she served as the Communications Director for the Peace Corps, where she led the agency's communications, public affairs, marketing, Web site, video production, materials development, graphic design and editing operations.

Tom Goodwin

Greg is an internationally-recognized Interactive Designer and Chief Creative Officer at Carousel30 Interactive in Washington DC. His design work has won international awards, been published in books and magazines, shown in galleries, and featured on design Web sites. He has also participated as a judge in several renowned design competitions and in panel discussions at industry events.

Greg has been at the forefront of emerging trends on the Web ever since his days designing user interfaces and marketing initiatives at a startup company during the Internet boom. He has continued to increase his knowledge of new trends in the industry ever since by staying actively involved in the design and online marketing community. He has worked in the Interactive Marketing field in many different capacities in non-profits, corporations and as a consultant, and through this experience has gained a deep understanding of organizations’ marketing, advertising and sales needs.

Jim Kilby is a 40 year veteran in the gaming industry. He is author of Casino Operations Management and Principles of Casino Marketing. In the Fall of 2007, Jim retired from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he taught casino management courses for over 20 years. He has served as consultant to virtually every major casino operator in the world.

Jake Lefebure is a co-founding partner and president of Design Army. As the principal project leader, he oversees new business and creative development for all of the studio’s accounts. Jake has guided award-winning designs for a variety of clients—from local retail boutiques to international live productions such as; Disney, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, University of Virginia, Signature Theatre, Washington Ballet, and the Washingtonian. In 2008, Jake was named by Graphic Design USA as one of the top 50 People to Watch and his creativity has been featured in every notable design publication, including Communication Arts, Graphis, HOW, Print, Step, Novum (Germany), Coupe (Canada) and Art4D (Thailand), as well as judging design competitions and lecturing at design events and universities. Mary Loftness is a principal at Profitable Customers and a 20-year veteran marketing strategist with extensive experience in the travel, gaming, entertainment and technology industries.  Mary learned the importance of total quality management; value based pricing and yield management working with Radisson and Westin hotels.  By the time she had moved to become the Vice President of Relationship Marketing at Station Casinos, she knew how to combine direct marketing, an effective call center and the web into a powerful marketing engine to drive both new and repeat customer behavior.  Lured by the opportunity to move to Colorado, she joined Gorp.com to create and manage the operations and call center for a 100,000+ page adventure travel website.

John Romero is a casino marketing consultant, writer and lecturer, and a former writer for AP, UPI and Sports Illustrated. His casino career began at the Sahara, Las Vegas, in 1960, and his direct mail writing won three Echo Awards, two gold and one silver, from the Direct Marketing Association. He developed and for 15 years directed the Sahara's "Super Sahara Celebration," the first large scale casino floor promotion. Later he conceived the idea of casino gaming tournaments and produced the first one in 1979.  His first book, "Casino Marketing," pushed the casino industry into the database revolution. Then "Secrets of Casino Marketing" revealed the persuasive sales tactics he uses to find and keep casino players. He co-founded Players International, Inc., a public company that specialized in gaming, in 1986. In 2004, he became the first recipient of the Casino Marketing Conference Lifetime Achievement Award.

Alan Silver has over 25 years’ experience in marketing and advertising and is currently President of A. L. Silver & Associates Advertising and Marketing. He is a veteran of the casino industry and has extensive experience both as a marketer and an educator in the casino and resort management industry. He first entered the casino industry in 1995 when he was appointed Director of Marketing for Sigma Game, Inc. He has served as an executive for several high-tech gaming and systems companies, including Aristocrat Technologies and Leisure Time Casinos and Resorts, where he was Director of Corporate Marketing and Planning.  He also served as Vice President of Corporate Marketing for a Native American Tribe that operated three casino properties. Prior to entering the gaming industry, Mr. Silver operated a successful, award winning advertising agency in Los Angeles for over ten years.

Maureen Siman is Vice President of Marketing for the the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority (ACCVA), which serves as the destination's principal marketing arm, stimulating economic growth through convention, business and leisure tourism development.  The Authority oversees the management of the 500,000-square-foot Atlantic City Convention Center and Boardwalk Hall, the top grossing mid-size arena in the world.
