Gaming companies create programs focused on individual aspects of diversity, including procurement and minority hiring programs, that are part of a companywide initiative. MGM MIRAGE

Leadership Institute
Leadership Institute is a six-month program, which prepares director-level employees for advancement to executive management. The program demonstrates standards of leadership excellence through “Leading by Example,” from the executive board presidents and vice presidents of MGM MIRAGE. The program consists of four six-week segments, including: business strategy, financial management, marketing and sales management and relationship management.

REACH
REACH is a six-month program, which provides supervisory-skills training for potentially promotable employees and new supervisors. Training is provided in partnership with Culinary Union Training Academy and Nevada Partners. Upon completion, participants receive career planning and coaching to assist them in finding promotional opportunities.

Take Flight
Take Flight is a six-month management development program designed to prepare entry-level managers and supervisors for career growth. The program develops leadership and teambuilding skills by exposing participants to different leaders of the company and offers high-impact external leadership development workshops and classes in dress-for-success and communications.

Team Leader Program
A highly constructed and job specific program, the Team Leader Program ensures quality and consistency in training through the use of Leader’s Guides, and defines responsibilities for new-hire training. Team leaders/buddies are either supervisors or lead employees and are chosen based on qualities such as “role model” type, specific position, knowledge, ability to train and superior customer service skills.

Associate Program
Launched June 2003, the goal of this program is to recruit candidates with 4-year degrees and at least three years of business experience (MBA preferred).

Diversity Results: Recruitment of Managers, Directors and Officers
This program has doubled promotions and new hires of minorities and has leveraged a multitude of newly created positions to attract new minority hires.

Executive Associate Program
Launched April 2003, the goal of this program is to recruit candidates with MBA degrees from a diverse set of colleges/universities, the National Black MBA Conference and Harrah’s Executive Search department who have at least three years of business experience in marketing, finance, human resources or operations.

President’s Associate Program
The goal of this program is to recruit MBA students from a diverse set of colleges/universities, the National Black MBA Conference and Harrah’s Executive Search department who can successfully perform as directors within 18 months of hire.

MGM MIRAGE

University of Nevada, Las Vegas Partnership
MGM MIRAGE has a partnership with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas College of Hotel Administration, designed to enhance minority student enrollment and graduation. The partnership encompasses recruitment, scholarships, internships and mentoring opportunities.

Executive Mentoring Program
This program is in development at MGM MIRAGE. The nine-month Executive Mentor Program is designed to prepare high-potential management-level employees for advancement to executive management.

Diversity in the Workplace

The objectives of this diversity training tool are to increase awareness of diversity issues and the need for diversity training, examine the ethnic changes in our country and the workplace, understand the importance and appreciation of people's differences, examine stereotypes and prejudices and how these ideas impact behaviors, understand resistance to diversity and its impact, and how to communicate more effectively with people from different ethnicity groups.

Ongoing Diversity Education
This program is a new hire orientation with an emphasis on Harrah’s Code of Commitment, especially the company's commitment to treat all employees with respect and our commitment to help make our communities vibrant places to live and work. The class also educates new employees about Harrah’s Discovering Diversity Program.

Ongoing Diversity Training
This is an ongoing diversity training program for employees, supervisors and executives as well as training and development for supervisors and managers.

MGM MIRAGE

Diversity Champions Workshop
The Diversity Champions Workshop began in July 2002 as a “Train-the-Trainer” program. An intense, five-day leadership development and diversity course, the role of Diversity Champions is to conduct management diversity training, assist with front-line employee diversity education and to be an advocate and role model of diversity within their work environment. Participants in the class include a select group of managers and supervisors from MGM MIRAGE properties and corporate departments. The focus of the 40-hour workshop is diversity training, and includes education in leadership skills, high performing teams and development of personal potential.  The class is taught using many methods including lectures, group activities, role-playing, journaling, guest speakers, videos and reading assignments. 

Diversity Management Training
Supervisors and managers are required to attend diversity management training conducted by Diversity Champions. Major topics presented in the class are the diversity mission statement, the definition of diversity, the importance of diversity, business imperative, stereotypes and personal awareness activities. 

Diversity Training Launch
The Diversity Awareness Launch introduces MGM MIRAGE diversity to front-line employees. The campaign educates employees about the company’s diversity philosophy with a series of educational events and internal communications, such as: a newsletter articles series, monthly articles published in property newsletters; a diversity video shown in new hire orientation and viewed by all employees; Diversity Launch, an informative and interactive booth set up in back-of-the-house areas; a diversity brochure; posters in back-of-the-house areas; and pre-shift meeting announcements.

ESL Program (English as a Second Language)
Classes offered to employees needing to improve their English-speaking skills.

New Employee Orientation
Employees are introduced to the company's diversity philosophy and commitment to diversity with a diversity video.

Security Diversity Training
This is a two-hour diversity training workshop for security officers to increase their awareness and sensitivity working with people of various cultures.

Workplace Spanish
This program is offered to all employees to improve communication and customer service skills to benefit both guests and coworkers.
